Individualized Studies, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science in Individualized Studies (BSIS) builds upon the academic strength and framework of UW-Stout’s online customized instruction programs and is focused on returning adults, transfer, and reentry students seeking to advance their careers with degree completion. The student-focused BSIS degree program embraces credit for prior learning and previously earned credits by embedding them within the design of an individualized degree program. This degree-completion program is designed to encourage creativity and allow students to pursue vocational goals outside of discipline-specific majors at UW-Stout. Students must complete their last 32 credits from UW-Stout.

Racial and Ethnic Studies (6 credits*)


Three credits must be selected from RES-A

*Students can select courses that count for more than one requirement within General Education (GE), Racial and Ethnic Studies (RES), and Global Perspectives (GLP).

Global Perspective (6 credits*)


Complete 6 credits of global perspective (GLP) approved courses, including GLP-approved instructor-led study abroad courses, or complete a program of university-approved work or university-approved study abroad not led by UW-Stout instructors.

*Students can select courses that count for more than one requirement within General Education (GE), Racial and Ethnic Studies (RES), and Global Perspectives (GLP).

Analytic Reasoning and Natural Sciences (10 credits)


At least one math or statistics course and a natural science course with a lab are required

Arts and Humanities (6 credits)


Must be from at least two categories: Art History/Music Appreciation, Creative/Performing Arts, Foreign Language & Culture, History, Literature, Philosophy

Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 credits)


Must be from at least two categories: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology

Cross-Disciplinary Issues (3 credits)


Courses must be selected from the list of approved Cross-Diciplinary issues courses

Social Responsibility and Ethical Reasoning (3 credits)


Courses must be selected from the list of approved social responsibility and ethical reasoning courses

Selectives (3 credits)


Selected from GE-approved courses
