Design for Sustainability Certificate

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Programs

The Design for Sustainability Certificate focuses on innovation advantages found in applied sustainability explored in a design context. Students will not only learn the fundamentals of design for sustainability and principles of corporate social responsibility, but how to take efforts to the next level as part of a circular and restorative (regenerative) economic framework. The certificate is built for professionals looking to not only learn about, but demonstrate their understanding of environmental and social justice (sustainability) issues, and how to apply that knowledge to any effort.

This program is a fully online, accredited, certificate program comprised of four courses (12 credits total): three courses from UW-Stout’s MFA in Design (MFAiD), and one Focus Area Elective available from a variety of graduate courses in design and other disciplines. Academic advising is provided by the UW-Stout’s MFAiD program director or certificate coordinator.

Electives (3 credits)

While there is flexibility regarding when certificate courses can be taken, the 3-credit elective course should be taken after DES 710 and DES 712 to ensure students have a base-level understanding of sustainability before completing the elective.
