Introduction

The Applied Science program offers the experience of learning science by doing science. The program emphasizes a broad scientific base plus experience in a chosen concentration and/or minor. Graduates prepare for careers in the sciences as well as further study in the allied health professions and graduate schools.

General Requirements
Bachelor of Science Degree

Total for Graduation 120 credits
Stout Core 40 credits
Major Studies 80 credits

Program Requirements

Stout Core (40 credits)

Analytic Reasoning and Natural Sciences (10 credits)

Note(s):

If students choose MATH 153  , one credit from either CHEM 136   College Chemistry II (5 cr.) or PHYS 282   University Physics II (5 cr.) will be applied to the ARNS requirement to complete 10 credits.

Arts and Humanities (6 credits)

Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 credits)

Social Responsibility and Ethical Reasoning (3 credits)

Courses must be from the list of approved social responsibility and ethical reasoning courses.

Racial and Ethnic Studies (2 courses)

Global Perspective (2 courses)

Major Studies (80 credits)

Required Core (3 credits)

Take the required Applied Science courses and choose one concentration to complete 120 credits.

Concentration Requirement (77 credits)

Choose an area of concentration from the following:

  • Applied Physics (APP)
  • Biology (BIO)
  • Industrial Chemistry (INC)
  • Interdisciplinary Science (IDS)
  • Materials and Nanoscience (MNS)

Applied Physics Concentration Program Requirements

A minimum grade of 2.0 is required in all physics courses.

Biology Concentration Program Requirements

BIO Technical Electives (30-31 credits)

Choose at least 30 credits from the following approved elective groups.

Biology Electives (12 credits)

Take at least 12 credits of any BIO-2XX or higher.

Science Electives (12 credits)

Take at least 12 credits of any 2XX or higher course with the following prefixes: ABMB, APSC, BIO, CNS, CHEM, ENSC, MATH, NANO, and PHYS.

Free Electives (6-7 credits)

Take enough credits (6-7 credits) to fulfill 120 total credits.

Industrial Chemistry Concentration Program Requirements

Interdisciplinary Science Concentration Program Requirements

Technical Electives (11-17 credits)

Take enough credits at the 2XX level or higher in BIO, CHEM, NANO, or PHYS to reach 120 credits.  At least 10 of these credits need to be a the 3XX level or higher.

Minor or Second Major
