         Fashion Design & Development, B.S. 4-year sequence 

Introduction

UW-Stout’s Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design & Development program emphasizes current industry practices, internship opportunities, and career placement. You’ll explore real-world aspects of the fashion industries including market research, planning, designing, developing, and marketing. Fashion Design & Development prepares students for the apparel, soft goods, and footwear industries. Students will experience hands-on skill development in all ready-to-wear categories including sportswear, knitwear, safety & technical products and special occasions. 

 Our students gain experience working on real-world projects with a unique combination of design and technology. To meet the needs of the fashion and industry, the program offers students the opportunity to focus on market research, creative design, technical design, quality analysis, textiles, color and print development, digital three-dimensional design and fabrication, garment engineering, global sourcing, and manufacturing. 

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design & Development prepares you for an exciting lifelong career in the fashion design industry. You’ll develop critical thinking and communication skills and gain hands-on experience in every aspect of the fashion and textiles industries.

Total for graduation 120 credits  
Stout Core 40 credits  
Program Core 80 credits  

 

Program Requirements


Stout Core Requirements (40 credits)


Analytic Reasoning and Natural Sciences (10 credits)


Courses must be from the areas of analytic reasoning and natural sciences. At least one mathematics or statistics course and a natural science course with a lab are required.

Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 credits)


Social Responsibility and Ethical Reasoning (3 credits)


Courses must be selected from the list of approved social responsibility and ethical reasoning courses.

Electives to reach 40 Stout Core credits


Students must also take courses with the following designations:


Racial and Ethnic Studies (2 courses)


With careful planning, students can choose courses that meet more than one requirement (one Stout Core category and either a RES or GLP designation).

Global Perspective (2 courses)


With careful planning, students can choose courses that meet more than one requirement (one Stout Core category and either a RES or GLP designation).

Program Core (80 credits)


Program Core consists of Art, Design, Art History, and Fashion Design & Development courses.

Art & Design History Selectives (9 credits)


Take 9 credits from the following coursework:

Elective Credits (6 credits)


Select one APRL selective and one ART/DES selective.
