The Art History minor enhances skills related to research, critical thinking, communication, and creative problem-solving. Through the analysis of works of art across the globe and through each period of our human history, students sharpen their observational and visual literacy skills - abilities that are highly transferable to countless fields. Looking at a work of art and understanding the finer details (color, texture, compositional format, medium, subject matter, symbolism) can demonstrate keen analytic and critical abilities. Because of the comprehensive nature of the field, students in Art History understand the trajectory of our collective human experience and grasp the important innovations and discoveries of each historical era. Art History students are also appreciative of cultural differences and have exposure to a wide range of opinions. Many Art History classes focus on works of art that have been controversial over the centuries, and therefore, students understand issues related to diversity of opinion, suppression of civil liberties, and the importance of freedom of expression. Whether students are majoring in Business Administration, Psychology, or in the STEM fields, completing a minor in Art History will add historical depth, creativity, and a global perspective to their academic and professional pursuits. A minor in Art History, combined with various majors or graduate study, will also make students more specifically qualified to pursue the following range of career paths: professor of art or art history, K12 art educator, museum or gallery curator, corporate art collection curator, historic buildings or heritage site manager, arts administrator, museum educator, art lawyer, art librarian, archivist, conservator, fine arts appraiser.
