        Illustration, B.F.A.: 4-year Sequence

Introduction

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Illustration prepares students for the diverse and dynamic field of professional illustration. Students explore traditional and digital media, narrative, concept, and character development for application in industries related to design, advertising, and entertainment.

The Illustration program will provide students with the specific skills to enter these industries, as well as a strong foundation and breadth of core skills which will allow them to adapt to new technologies and rapidly-evolving industry needs. The Illustration program integrates and fosters a strong relationship between studio art and digital design, as well as creative writing and storytelling. Students will acquire hands-on experience using industry standard tools, software, and creative techniques, and are encouraged to participate in research projects, co-ops, or study abroad experiences. Upper-level and capstone courses focus on individual portfolio development and a perpetually-evolving industry practice.

A required mid-program portfolio review offers illustration students an assessment of their progress in foundation art and design courses, and relevant guidance related to their future success. Extensive library resources and the art and design department visual resource center are significant assets. A 2.0 overall grade point average and a 2.5 or better in Department of Visual and Performing Arts and Department of Design courses (ART/ARTH/DES/GDD/ILL) is required to complete this Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Illustration students must present a portfolio of their work in the final semester as part of a public exhibition hosted by the School of Art and Design.

The BFA in Illustration program provides students with an innovative, specialized education that is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
