Family and Consumer Sciences Education, B.S.: 4-year sequence ; 4-year sequence (distance delivery)
Introduction
he Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education prepares students to teach in elementary, middle, junior high and high school settings across the United States. The program prepares professionals who are knowledgeable regarding subject matter and content in the field of family and consumer sciences education, including life-span human development, personal and family relationships, parenting, consumer economics, food and nutrition, housing, textiles, and apparel. The program is also offered with a distance option for geographically-bound students seeking Career and Technical Education certification.

An overall cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required for graduation.

Racial and Ethnic Studies (6 credits*)
Three credits must be selected from RES-A.
Global Perspective (6 credits*)
Complete a program of university-approved work or study abroad or 6 credits of global perspective approved courses.
General Education (40 credits)
Communication Skills (9 credits)
English and Speech courses require a grade of C or better.
Analytic Reasoning and Natural Sciences (10 credits)
Remaining course must be from the areas of analytic reasoning and natural sciences. At least one mathematics or statistics course and a natural science course with a lab are required.
Arts and the Humanities (6 credits)
Remaining course must be from areas including art history/music & theater appreciation, creative/performing arts, foreign language and culture, history, literature, and philosophy.
Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 credits)
Cross-disciplinary Issues (3 credits)
Courses must be selected from the list of approved cross-disciplinary issues courses.
Social Responsibility and Ethical Reasoning (3 credits)
Courses must be selected from the list of approved social responsibility and ethical reasoning courses.
Selectives (3 credits)
Courses/credits may be selected from any category to meet the 40-credit requirement.

All courses require a “C” or better.
*Must be accepted into the School of Education prior to enrollment.

Teacher Education Requirements
Students proceed through a series of three benchmarks as they move toward licensure.
Benchmark II: Application for Student Teaching
Benchmark II must be completed prior to student teaching. Detailed information is online at: https://www.uwstout.edu/academics/colleges-schools/school-education/benchmark-information
- Complete Application for Student Teaching form
- Maintain a 2.75 grade point average
- Pass Content Knowledge Exam (Praxis II) or have 3.0 GPA on Content Core classes
- Receive clearance through an updated background check
- Complete a satisfactory tuberculosis (TB) test
- Receive satisfactory portfolio assessment by faculty
- Receive satisfactory rating on Benchmark II Student Interview
- Submit copies of resume to the School of Education prior to student teaching
- Receive passing scores on Embedded Signature Assessments (ESA)
Benchmark III: Program Completion

- Complete electronic portfolio and receive a basic or higher proficiency level of assessment
- Complete all program coursework
- Meet all program-specific requirements
- Student teach at two levels: Middle School and High School, unless internship placement occurs
- Receive a satisfactory student teaching assessment
- Receive a satisfactory disposition review
- Submit EDTPA
Benchmark IV: WI Licensure
- For licensure studentsmust pass the EDTPA
